The Summer Heat is Here - Is Your Team Ready? - SSCI Environmental
Every summer, one of the biggest risks facing employees is something we all experience every day—heat.
Whether your team is collecting samples, inspecting facilities, managing construction projects, or performing routine maintenance, working in high temperatures can take a serious toll. The good news is that most heat-related illnesses can be preventedwith a little planning and awareness.
Heat Can Affect More Than Your Comfort
Heat doesn't just make people uncomfortable—it affects how they think and work.
We've all been there. You're trying to finish "just one more task" before heading back to the truck. Maybe it's one last inspection, one last sample, or one last piece of equipment to check. That's often when fatigue sets in, concentration slips, and mistakes happen.
Heat stress isn't limited to triple-digit temperatures, either. High humidity, direct sunlight, and even the PPE workers wear every day can make it much harder for the body to cool itself.
Small Changes Make a Big Difference
Simple practices like starting work earlier in the day, encouraging employees to drink water before they feel thirsty, scheduling short recovery breaks in the shade, and checking in on coworkers can dramatically reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
Know When Someone Needs Help
One of the challenges with heat illness is that it often develops gradually.
If a coworker starts acting unusually tired, complains of dizziness, develops muscle cramps, or seems confused, don't ignore it. Those early warning signs are your opportunity to step in before the situation becomes an emergency.
If someone loses consciousness, becomes confused, or stops sweating despite continued heat exposure, call emergency medical services immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency where every minute counts.
Safety Is Easier When You Have the Right Partner
Creating a strong heat safety program goes beyond keeping a cooler full of water on the job-site. It starts with planning, training, and giving employees the tools they need to recognize and respond to hazards before they become incidents.
At SSCI, we work with organizations to develop practical, effective safety programs that fit the way they actually work.
From compliance audits and written safety programs to site-specific health and safety plans, industrial hygiene services, and employee training, our goal is simple: help our clients keep their people safe while staying compliant.
Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to go home safely.
